Plan your Rational® ClearQuest® database set architecture

Determine the number of schema repositories and user databases required for Rational® ClearQuest® environment and the vendor databases and servers that support your database set.

All deployments of Rational® ClearQuest® must have an administrative host. The administrative host contains the administrative tools that are used to manage the Rational® ClearQuest® environment. All the tools necessary for administering the database set, MultiSite, users and user groups and other administrative responsibilities are installed on this computer. The client components can also be installed for basic ClearQuest® functionality such as creating and working with queries, records, charts, and reports.

The Administrative host must be installed on Windows™.

Some reasons for installing Rational® ClearQuest® on Linux™ or the UNIX™ system are:
  • Host the Rational® ClearQuest® Server and Web Application which provides access to Rational® ClearQuest® repositories through a Web-based interface
  • Provide access to the Rational® ClearQuest® Clients for users who work solely Linux™ and UNIX™ system platforms
  • Administer a Rational® ClearQuest® MultiSite environment
  • Integrate with DevOps Code ClearCase®, both the Base and UCM versions
You can also host the database management systems which house your schema repositories and user databases on Linux™ or the UNIX™ system. However, you do not need to install Rational® ClearQuest® on these platforms if your only reason for incorporating them into your environment is to host the database management systems. Schema repositories and user databases can only be created and administered from a Windows™ computer which acts as the administrative host.

Selecting your servers and databases

Rational® ClearQuest® allows you to architect your environment in any manor that best suites your organization's needs as along as all the servers and databases are supported. You may already know the type of configuration you want and therefore your next step is simply to verify that you servers and databases are supported. If you only have a rough idea of how your environment should look, here are a few implications to consider:
  • How geographically distributed is your organization?
  • How many users to have and what will be their performance needs?
  • Do you plan to deploy a Web environment?
  • Do you plan to deploy a MultiSite environment?
