- Installation introduction
  This section contains the instructions to install, update, and uninstall your product.
- Planning the installation
  Before you install or update the product, plan the installation. When you effectively plan and understand the key aspects of the installation process, you can ensure a successful installation.

  - Increasing the number of file handles on Linux™ workstations
    For best product performance, increase the number of file handles above the default of 1024 handles.
  - Mounting a drive
    If you are installing the product on Linux™, before you begin the installation process, mount the drive.
  - Verifying and extracting electronic images
    If you download the installation files from IBM® Passport Advantage®, before you install the software, verify the completeness of the downloaded files and extract the electronic image from the files.

  To install IBM Rational Business Developer, follow the procedures in this section.
- Installing WebSphere® Application Server
  You can install WebSphere® Application Server.
- Post-installation tasks
  After you install your product, complete post-installation tasks, configure your product, and then start the product.
- Modifying software
  With the Modify Packages wizard in IBM® Installation Manager, you can change the language and feature selections of an installed product package. You can also use the Modify Packages wizard to install new features that might be included in a package update, such as a refresh pack.
- Updating software
  You can search for product updates and install the updates for your IBM® product.
- Reverting updates to previous versions
  You can remove an update to a package in order to revert to a previous version by using the Roll Back wizard of IBM® Installation Manager.
- Uninstalling software
  Use the IBM® Installation Manager to uninstall your product. If no other products are installed, you can uninstall Installation Manager also.
- Installing silently
  You can install a product package silently by using either Installation Manager in silent installation mode or by using IBM® Installation Manager installer. When you run Installation Manager in silent mode, the user interface is not available; instead, a response file inputs the commands that are required to install the product package.

Preinstallation checklist

Before you install your product, ensure that the preinstallation steps are completed as required.

Procedure

If you are installing from an electronic image that was downloaded from IBM® Passport Advantage®, verify that you have the required parts and have extracted the download files correctly.
Ensure that you are logged on to your computer with an appropriate user ID.
For Linux™:
- If you are installing from physical media, mount your disk drive.
- If you want people besides the root user to use the product, before you install the product, set the umask variable to 0022. To set this variable, log in as the root user, start a terminal session, and type umask 0022.
- Increase the number of file handles on your computer.
